29 imagesTilleys house, a newly built wooden house in the Cotswolds, with influences from Pembrokeshire. "I never expected that when I returned to the Cotswolds after 20 years (I grew up here, then lived in Oxford, Sydney and London) I would live in a modern, blue, wooden house. I always thought it would be a fairly dark 500 year old Cotswold stone cottage, with flag stones and a dusty inglenook fireplace, because that’s what I grew up in. We never expected to build a house either, but the moment we turned into the drive and saw the original 1936 Colt cottage, I knew that this was the right location for our family house in the country. The new blue house has influences from the one we knocked down – it’s wooden, it has some small cosy rooms and I’ve re-created the cottage garden. The old house had very few windows – yet we have the most beautiful views in all directions (grazing bulls, cows, wild flower meadows that are home to polo ponies in the winter – the church spire and Temple Guiting Manor – a la Sophie Conran) so we put in as many windows as possible. Other influences are from my love of Pembrokeshire - antique stick furniture and purple foxgloves. Our modern appreciation manifests itself in contemporary paintings, some modern furniture, including furnishings (tiles and fabric) by Timorous Beasties, souvenirs from world travels – from india, s-e asia, morrocco, italy, a large kitchen and living room – and very high ceilings. The whole house is wooden – apart from the ultimate luxury – cotswold stone flagstones. They’re made from Guiting stone, quarried just over the ridge of the hill. I wanted to ground the house on such a relevant base."
